Sustainability is critical to sport and the world's biggest sports organizations including the International Olympic Committee and FIFA are developing sustainability commitments as part of their everyday management and legacy. PIC is the world leader on sustainability for the sport of pickleball. Unfortunately, pickleball is a plastic pollution machine. As pickleball gains worldwide players, the sport will produce billions of plastic pickleballs into the planet's waste streams. This is unacceptable and we must all work together to avoid it. PIC is launching a campaign of world collaboration to find an alternative source material replacing plastic.
Nano and microplastic is almost everywhere on Earth. The Marianas Trench, the Himalayas, Antarctica, the Amazon. It's corrupting the planet, biodiversity and even in human bodies including our brain, lungs, blood, hearts where research has shown that plastic and its toxins are causing major health damage. Immunity disfunctions, genotoxicity, neurodevelopmental disorders. Plastic has been found in the lungs of patients with cancer and chronic lung disease. We are ingesting, absorbing and inhaling plastic. Our planet is suffering from it. By 2050, it is estimated that there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish.
PIC is launching PlasticFree Pickleball to inspire the world to develop an alternative material to make environmentally-friendly, economically sustainable, non-plastic pickleballs. It will take five to six years to viably produce this next-generation pickleball, but it must happen and it will be mandated by PIC.
